Texas BBQ!

When some of you think of barbeque, you think of pulled pork and some sort of tomato or vinegar based BBQ sauce.  Others will think of beef barbeque, or brisket, with a really hearty and sometimes spicy BBQ sauce.  Regardless of what your current perception is of barbeque, it is a necessity while you are in Austin to have brisket.  One of the most well known barbeque locations is the Salt Lick.  Many of you may have heard of the Salt Lick from your friends who have visited Austin or perhaps you are a fan of the show Man vs Food and have seen Adam Richman enjoy many of the different smoked items on the menu.

While the food here is incredibly delicious, the atmosphere of the restaurant is what really makes this a fun place to visit. The Salt Lick is about 30 minutes southwest of Austin in Driftwood, TX.  Many times, there is a wait for a table, but there is usually live music outside, fresh squeezed lemonade, and the new Salt Lick Cellars where you can taste wine as well purchase refreshments.  If you are particular about your wine, beer or soda choice, the Salt Lick is BYOB and many attendees arrive with a cooler of drinks to stay for the long haul.

The “waiting area”

The infamous open pit

Once you get called to take a seat—get excited!  Be sure to check out the open pit as you walk in that carries the great smell of barbeque.  The menu will incorporate finger-licking-good ribs, beef, chicken, turkey, and sausage and accompanied by a tangy sauce and the usual sides.  One of the best parts of the Salt Lick is that there is an all you can eat option!  The sides include fresh and crisp cole slaw, beans, potato salad, pickles, onions, and bread.  If your stomach still allows, there is also some really great peach cobbler and pecan pie.  The final point is that this location is cash-only, but there is an on-site ATM.

Enjoy!
